A splendid resin statue made by an unknown artist, in a limited edition. There is a label under the brass base specifying the edition number of the statue (1399/2000). This statue represents the Maasai people, as specified on the label below. The sculpture is made entirely of resin, worked in different ways. The base depicts a very muddy ground on which a little girl rests her feet, holding on to her mother’s skirt. The little girl is dressed exactly as Maasai tradition dictates: she wears a dark one-shouldered tunic, with jewellery embellishing every limb of her body. Around her neck we see a majestic pendant necklace, on her arms two bracelets each, at different heights, and her ankles are also adorned with silver bracelets. The little girl has her gaze turned towards the other child who is in her mother’s arms. The central figure in this sculpture is the mother, depicted as very tall, with very long legs. Mama Africa is depicted with a smiling and serene face, very beautiful. Her head is adorned with different typical African elements: we see a very impressive necklace, a very large and long earring on her left ear, with elements of pearls and stones. The head is encircled with a perpendicular strip that creates the effect of a crown. The woman’s torso is naked, leaving her breasts visible. The arms are adorned with many bracelets and converge to clasp her youngest son. The youngest son is in her arms and reaches out to approach the child who is lying on the ground. The child is clearly naked, only dressed in typical jewellery. The woman’s skirt is worked in such a way that it looks like fabric, truly a wonderful and realistic technique. The skirt is fastened to the woman’s hip, and is also adorned with beads on all hems. This is a marvellous statue, which is not only beautiful to look at but also has a wonderful meaning of Mama Africa holding and protecting her children.
